  • My Mom – Shirley Hayward – Service March 23, 2021
My mom was loved by many. The most important people (other than Dad) are in this room today. Mom loved our family gatherings. Those were the highlights of her last few years after Dad passed. Everyone here contributed to her happiness.
It is my honor today to share my gratitude that l have for my mom. I have heard it said many times that no one will ever love you as much as your mom. Scott and l can attest to that fact.
There were many things l loved about mom but the one thing that l admired was that she always let you know her thoughts. If she didn’t like something, you knew it and in the same breath she never let a phone call end without saying “I love you”.
When l look back on her life it was a beautiful life and something that would be envied by many. Mom was a hard worker and our supper table was always was filled with food from the farm. She enjoyed seasonal work as well, cutting grapes out near Uncle Garth’s home in North Pelham, working at the dairy bar during the fair times with Aunt Rosalee, entering produce and crafts at the Wainfleet fair, an active member of the women’s club, organizing church suppers and being part of the group that catered weddings and events.
Mom did like to enjoy life. Trips and vacations were a big part of Scott’s and my childhood. Some of the fun trips I can remember was going up north where we would rent cabins for the whole clan: grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Fishing was a huge part of the vacation and if l can recall a lot of competition between Uncle Larry and mom in seeing who got the most or biggest fish. But over all the best memory of those times were the laughter. Mom liked to laugh.
When Dad retired the fun just continued. Mom and Dad went out square dancing probably three or four nights a week. I can remember Grandma Hayward saying that you would think they were teenagers again. Square dancing took them all over the world and helped to make them feel young again.
Mom’s joy also came from her granddaughters, Robin, Jade and Krystal. She was so proud of all of you and I can see Gram in each one of you. You will carry on the good traits that she instilled in all of us.
As her life continued her great grandchildren, Emily, Chelsea, Colton and Ethan were her new sense of pride. She would always ask for a story about the kids. Tell me what Chelsea and Colton are up to and l know she did the same with Scott, tell me about Emily and Ethan. I would know this because she would share these stories with me and vise versa with Scott but it didn’t end there. Everyone at St Charles was up to date with Emily, Chelsea, Colton and Ethan. And everyone always told mom, you have a beautiful family.
Mom taught me many things in life but the biggest and most important one was to enjoy each day. As she always said, “You never know what the day will bring.” In honor of mom we will continue to enjoy life and share our beautiful memories of her.
